Firefighter Essays

Firefighter Essays Firefighter Essays Domestic Fires.† National Dangers. Georgia Line, 23 Jan. 1/â€Å'/â€Å'09. Web. 23 Aug. 2011. firefighters.edu. Fire fighters spend much of their time at fire stations, which are usually similar to dormitories. When an alarm sounds, fire fighters respond, regardless of the weather or hour. Fire fighting involves a high risk of death or injury. Common causes include floors caving in, walls toppling, traffic accidents, and exposure to flame and smoke. Fire fighters also may come into contact with poisonous, flammable, or explosive gases and chemicals and radioactive materials, all of which may have immediate or long-term effects on their health. For these reasons, they must wear protective gear that can be very heavy and hot. I learned a lot of information from this piece, tells me a little bit more about what firefighters deal with. This will be very useful to me, in my Senior Project. Ellyn, Glen Lewis. â€Å"How to Become a Firefighter.† Academic Programs. College of DuPage, 2 Mar. 3/â€Å'/â€Å'. Web. 24 Aug. 2011. http://home.cod.edu//â€Å'programsDegrees//. Firefighters today do much more than fight fires. They provide rescue services, handle hazardous chemical emergencies and conduct fire prevention, investigation and inspection activities. Firefighters also do most of the cleaning and maintenance work required to keep their tools, equipment, buildings and apparatus ready for immediate response. Many Illinois communities depend on their fire departments to provide emergency medical services and sometimes ambulance services. If you become a firefighter, you will be assigned to a team, called a â€Å"company,† that provides some or all of these services. This information was not very helpful to me. I have already read, and learned about this. â€Å"FireFighters.† Bureau of Labor Statistic. United States Dept. of Labor, 17 Dec. 2009. Web. 22 Aug. 2011. bls.gov//â€Å'ocos329.htm. During duty hours, fire fighters must be prepared to respond immediately to a fire or other emergency. Fighting fires is complex and dangerous and requires organization and teamwork. At every emergency scene, fire fighters perform specific duties assigned by a superior officer. At fires, they connect hose lines to hydrants and operate a pump to send water to high-pressure hoses. Some carry hoses, climb ladders, and enter burning buildings, using systematic and careful procedures, to put out fires. This information is very useful to me, because it gives me a little of an idea how Firefighters work. This information will help me in my research to describe to people what firefighters do. â€Å"Fire Information.† Fire Nation. Golden South, 11 Apr. 4/â€Å'/â€Å'2008. Web. 25 Aug. 2011. firenation.com. Fire marshals and fire inspector s work to prevent fires. They conduct building inspections. They make sure that laws about fire safety are followed. They also work with builders and city planners. They often visit schools to teach fire safety. Fire investigators study fires to see how they started. They collect evidence from the scene and talk to witnesses. Fire fighters live at fire stations much of the time. Most fire stations have living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. When the alarm sounds, fire fighters must respond rapidly. Fire fighting is dangerous work. During a fire, floors can cave in and walls can topple. Flames and smoke can burn or kill. Fire fighters may come in contact with poisonous gases or other hazardous materials. To protect themselves, fire fighters wear protective gear which can be heavy and hot. Many fire fighters work more than 50 hours a week. Their hours are often longer and more varied than the hours of other workers. In some agencies, fire fighters can be on duty for 24 hours straight. This section is very helpful to me. This would be great in my project. â€Å"Fire Safety.† Kids Zone. Rescue 1, 5 Oct. 10/â€Å'/â€Å'2006. Web. 25 Aug. 2011. firesafetyforteens.org/safety-rules.html. -

Colored Fire Spray Bottles

Colored Fire Spray Bottles In the pilot episode of Breaking Bad, chemistry teacher Walt White performs a demonstration in which he changes the color of a bunsen burner flame by spraying the flame with chemicals. You can perform the colored fire demonstration yourself. All you need are some common chemicals, alcohol, and spray bottles. Here is a list of metal salts you can use to (safely) color fire. The chemicals have low toxicity and any smoke produced wont be any better/worse for you than normal wood smoke: Colored Fire Chemicals Heres a list of common chemicals and the colors of flames they produce: Dark red lithium chlorideRed strontium chloride (found in emergency flares)Orange calcium chloride (a bleaching powder)Yellow sodium chloride (table salt) or sodium carbonateYellowish green borax (sodium borate, a common insecticide and cleaning agent)Green copper sulfate (found in some pool and aquarium chemicals)Blue copper chloride (lab chemical, but other copper compounds found in algicides and fungicides may work)Violet 3 parts potassium sulfate, 1 part potassium nitrate (saltpeter)Purple potassium chloride (sometimes sold as a salt substitute)White magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) Prepare the Flame Colorants If you were just coloring a campfire or other wood fire, you could simply sprinkle the dry metal salts onto the fire. Copper chloride is especially nice for this since the sodium that is naturally present in wood causes this chemical to produce a mix of blue, green, and yellow flames. However, for the gas flame in a burner, you need the salts dissolved in a flammable liquid. The obvious choice here is alcohol. Common alcohols found around the home could include rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or ethanol (e.g., in vodka). In some cases, the metal salts will first need to be dissolved in a small volume of water and then mixed with alcohol so that they can be spray onto a flame. Some salts may not dissolve, so what you can do is grind them into a fine powder and suspend them in liquid. Do not spray alcohol or any flammable chemical across a flame toward people! Safety Information While the colorants used in this demonstration are generally safe, this project involves flammable materials and flames. There is an innate risk of burns and uncontrolled fire. Be sure to have a working fire extinguisher handy, wear appropriate safety gear, and maintain a safe distance between the demonstration and the demonstrator/audience. Flames involving alcohol may be extinguished with water, by suffocation, or with any fire extinguisher. The demonstrator is advised to wear low-flammability clothing (typically natural fibers) rather than flammable synthetic clothing. A little preparation makes for a safe and memorable demonstration that will raise interest in chemistry! Participles and Perfect Verb Tenses

Participles and Perfect Verb Tenses Participles and Perfect Verb Tenses Participles and Perfect Verb Tenses By Maeve Maddox Some comments I received on the post about the forms of the irregular verb drink indicate that not everyone is clear as to how participles are used to form verb tenses that use the helping verbs has, have and had. Heres a review. Participles are verb forms, but they are incomplete. In order to function as real verbs, they must be used with helping verbs. English has two participles: the present participle and the past participle. The present participle always ends in -ing: jumping, skiing, writing, drinking, sighing, etc. The past participle usually ends in -ed, as in called, climbed, interrogated, and studied. Many verbs, however, have past participles that do not end in -ed. Some, for example, end in -en: write/wrote/(have) written bite/bit/(have) bitten take/took/(have) taken Some end in -t: mean/meant/(have) meant creep/crept/(have) crept sleep/slept/(have) slept Many irregular verbs, like drink, have distinctive past participle forms: drink/drank/(have) drunk go/went/(have) gone am-is/was/(have) been slay/slew/(have) slain Participles have numerous uses, but right now Im just looking at how they are used to form the following verb tenses: present perfect past perfect present perfect progressive past perfect progressive Present Perfect The present perfect tense is used to describe a) an action that happened at an indefinite time in the past b) an action that that began in the past and continues in the present The helping verbs used with the past participle to form the present perfect tense are has and have: The House of Windsor has ruled England since 1917. My sister has tried every kind of shampoo on the market. We have written to them numerous times without receiving an answer. Past Perfect Tense The past perfect tense is used to describe an action that took place in the past before another past action. The helping verb used with the past participle to form the past perfect is had: Before reinforcements arrived, the enemy had captured most of the men. Present Perfect Progressive The present perfect progressive describes an action that began in the past, continues in the present, and may continue into the future. The present participle is used with the helping verbs has been and have been to form the present perfect progressive: I have been thinking about going to France one more time. Charlie has been trying to make the team for two years now. We have been sitting in the park for hours. The teachers have been meeting after school to plan the new schedules. Past Perfect Progressive The past perfect progressive describes a past, ongoing action that was completed before some other past action. The present participle is used with the helping verbs had been to form the past perfect progressive: When the accident occurred, she had been talking on her cell phone. English - American Parenting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

English - American Parenting - Essay Example Parenting techniques and practices vary on the basis of religion, economy, culture, geography and technology. There are many factors that shape the parenting practices of a particular society. Parenting must be given an absolute meaning and purpose because children are the future of this world and their behavior should reflect their abilities to create a better world. Today, getting married and having children is nothing more than a custom which is not the true purpose of having a family. Parents must first understand why having children is important to them and whether they will be able to raise their children well. American way of parenting has been criticized time and again and an average individual might even agree to this criticism since the exposure of American family life that this individual may have had would point to very unhealthy and poor parenting practices. That is why shopping and junk food have become the symbols of western teenage life. Symbols represent a lot of val ues for families. For Chua, a violin represented eastern family values. â€Å"In our household, the violin had become a symbol. For me it symbolized excellence, refinement and depth – the opposite of shopping malls, mega-sized Cokes, teenage clothes and crass consumerism.† (Chua 207) Human beings evolve to survive. Their lifestyles are in a state of constant flux. Parents are familiar with their drawbacks and they wish to see such drawbacks absent in their children however, what they need to understand is how these drawbacks originated within them in the first place. Understanding the child’s psychology is crucial to practice ideal parenting. Elinor Ochs conducted a study in which she observed the life of thirty two middle-class families of Los Angeles. Her findings show that children of the subject families did not perform household obligations on a regular basis unless instructed otherwise. â€Å"In one fairly typical encounter, a father asked his eight-year- old son five times to please go take a bath or a shower. After the fifth plea went unheeded, the father picked the boy up and carried him into the bathroom. A few minutes later, the kid, still unwashed, wandered into another room to play a video game† (Kolbert, 2012). In another encounter an eight year old girl ordered her father to bring her silverware even though she knew exactly where the silverware was kept. Another boy named Ben could not put his sneakers on because their laces were ties and he had to ask for his father’s help since he did not know how to untie them. Such behavior of children is fairly common among the American families. â€Å"According to one poll, commissioned by Time and CNN, two-thirds of American parents think that their children are spoiled† (Kolbert, 2012). This behavior of children has certain number of reasons attached to it; poor parenting methods being the primary one. It is not just the fact that the American children have been b ombarded with variety of material objects such as toys, clothes, video games, cell phones, laptops, iPads, IPhones, computer, television, PlayStation and cameras to fill their lives with but also the fact that parents have lost authority over their children. Nowadays parents require their children’

Evaluate the risk exposure to commercial bank whilst they endeavour to Essay

Evaluate the risk exposure to commercial bank whilst they endeavour to maximize their revenues within profitable lending - Essay Example It is the most common risk experienced by banks in lending. It occurs when customers are unable to meet their obligations, fall due and causes the bank to suffer a loss. Different bank transactions that cause the credit risk may result from the lending made to the governments, individuals, and companies. Second, it may result from lending money in exchange for security bonds. Commercial banks also exchange lending with shares, swaps, trade finance transactions, and other items. The probability of risk increased due to the different items that may cause the credit risk. The risk increase in the event, the bank fails to evaluate the customer credit worthiness. It is more probable to lose a huge sum of money when commercial banks offer huge loans to customers without proper credit rating. The risk results from market rate fluctuations. Normally, the banks allow customers to deposit money in the bank at a certain rate. Subsequently, banks give out the money in the form of loans at a rate higher than the one paid to depositors. Commercial banks risk a loss when the government control lowers the lending interest rates. If the lending interest’s rates decrease below the interest rate provided to depositor’s commercial banks may experience difficulties paying back the money to the depositors. The probability and the severity of loss increase when the government exercises serious controls in the monetary market. The interest rate risk affects the currents earnings of a firm and the present value of the future cash flows due to changes in the interest factor value. The depositors in a bank may withdraw their deposits from the bank any time as long as they do not violate the terms agreed. At the same time, the bank may offer huge sums of loan against few deposits made by customers. In case the customers decide withdraw their deposits, the funds will be unavailable. The liquidity risk is the probability that the bank will

Employment law - the employment relationship Essay

Employment law - the employment relationship - Essay Example 25,000. The Tribunal cannot also try cases involving personal injury, breach of agreement to provide accommodation by the employer to the employee, breach of agreement in respect of intellectual property, breach of agreement of confidentiality or breach of agreement in restraint of trade which can only be heard by courts (Nairns, 2008). The statutory limit of claim of ? 25,000 cannot be circumvented by making a claim for damages for wrongful dismissal for the maximum amount before the tribunal and making another claim for balance of damages in the High Court by splitting the same cause of action into two as held in Fraser v HLMAD (2006). Employment tribunal is machinery for dispute resolution. Employment tribunal can be approached by parties after the expiry of conciliation period. Rule 22 of the Employment Tribunals (Constitution and Rules of Procedure) Regulation 2004 bars a tribunal from hearing any case other than cases of discrimination, equal pay and whistle blowing until the e xpiry of the prescribed conciliation period of 13 weeks or 7 weeks from the date of claim made to the respondent depending upon the nature disputes. For disputes of technical nature such as deduction from wages, time off work, breach of contract, redundancy payments and paid annual leave, a lesser period of seven days conciliation applies. The standard conciliation period can be extended by two weeks if there are prospects of settlement as may be considered by ACAS whose duty is to promote the improvement of industrial relations. The judicial dispute resolution starts with employment tribunals which were originally created by Industrial Training Act 1964 and given common law jurisdiction to adjudicate claims for breach of contract by termination of employment. Thus, these tribunals which began as industrial tribunals have transformed into ‘employment tribunals’ in 1998. The power to settle employment disputes is conferred by section 3 of The Employment Tribunals Act 199 6 in replacement of section 131 of the Employment Protection (Consolidation Act) 1978 The tribunals are preferred dispute resolution as they are designed to facilitate speedy resolution of industrial disputes which are often heavy with facts with their potential advantages of ‘ease of access, informality and inexpensiveness’. The employment tribunals having simplified pre-trial procedure with simplified pleadings, are vested with wide powers to adjudicate in ‘a common sense way’ as part of ‘good industrial practice’. However, the law they have to apply is so complex that they are often commented on the legality of the proceedings and decisions. The common sense access to quick justice though a laudable claim is not always compatible with the hard law that has to be followed in most of the cases. The quick and informal justice that an Employment tribunal can provide is in view of the undesirability of appeals that would complicate the matter fur ther. An Employment Tribunal can only decide on the question of facts. Any appeal from its decision can only be made on a question of law. This rule is rigorously applied in that an appeal will be decided on law and remanded back to the tribunal to decide on the que

How Business is Conducted on a Social And Ethical Sense Research Paper

How Business is Conducted on a Social And Ethical Sense - Research Paper Example As the paper declares  some of the practices that will be practiced and encouraged by a business doing its business in an ethical and social manner include doing honest business, practicing truthfulness and the prohibition of stealing among its different stakeholders. Business ethics covers the moral nature of company practices and actions. From the discussion it is clear that the statements of the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch were met with a lot of criticism and reactions, mainly because he made the statements that his company would only market clothes for the people with good-looking figures, and not other groups. The most sensitive of the statements made included that the company does not offer women’s shirts’ sizes beyond large, and gave the reason that the company was not out to supply its clothes for fat people. The emphasis of the statement was that fat people did not have the right to wear the clothes produced by the company. The reasons given for the statement i ncluded that only people with cool bodies could be considered winners, in that they have managed to keep a lean body figure. On the other hand, the emphasis was that fat people are losers that have failed to keep their weight in check, and therefore they did not deserve to wear the clothes made by the company.  The comments were taken seriously, by the company’s customers and potential customers, and that became evident from the uncontained reduction in sales revenues over a short duration.
